The Mighty Waterfall and the Beautiful Little Fish: Chapter 8

For a whole month, the mighty Waterfall poured out in full force. And every day, the wise Cloud visited the mighty Waterfall. The progress was amazing. The algae and the stench were swept away into the ocean. Water lilies and the lily pads inhabited the top of the lagoon again. The surrounding vegetation stood up straighter, and their leaves reflected a healthy green hue. The lagoon was very suitable for life.

The mighty Waterfall remembered his betrayal to his friends. He wanted to make things right. “Wise Cloud, my former self was foolish and selfish. I kicked the frogs, the schools of fishes, the dolphins, the turtles, and the flocks of birds out of the lagoon. I made them leave for the ocean. Perhaps you’ve seen them during your travels?”

The wise Cloud nodded.

“I would like to make things right and welcome them back. But I don’t know where they are. You’ve done so much for me already. May I ask for another favor? When you see them, please tell them that I regret the wrong I have done to them and that I am sorry. They are welcomed back to the lagoon and I will never kick them out again.”

“It is good that you remember your friends. I will do what you asked.” The wise Cloud blew a torrent of wind into the direction of the ocean carrying a message welcoming to the frogs, the schools of fishes, the dolphins, the turtles, and the flocks of birds back to the lagoon.

And then they waited.

Next day, the frogs showed up. They hopped from the island surrounding the lagoon. They cautiously approached the mighty Waterfall, in anticipation that the “welcome home” message was too good to be true.

The mighty Waterfall saw their trepidation and said, “Do not be afraid. I was wrong when I made you leave your home. Please settle down into the lagoon and make it your home once again. And please forgive me.”

The frogs croaked, “We forgive you.” And they jumped into the water and leapt onto the lily pads.

The following day, the fishes showed up. They swam from the gulf of the ocean. They saw the frogs leaping from lily pad to lily pad. Hope stirred in their hearts. So they swam up to the mighty Waterfall and asked, “Is the message true? Are we welcomed back?”

“Yes, it is true. I was wrong when I made you leave your home. Please settle down into the lagoon and make it your home once again. And please forgive me.”

“We forgive you.” And the fishes darted all over the lagoon, reflecting the light like moving clumps of silver coins.

The day after, the dolphins showed up. They swam from the middle of the ocean. When they saw the frogs leaping from lily pad to lily pad and the fishes darting here and there on the bottom of the lagoon, they could not help but be playful. They snuck up to the mighty Waterfall and squirted water on him. They said, “Hooray, we are back.”

“Welcome back, dolphins. Please settle down into the lagoon and make it your home once again. And please forgive me.”

The dolphins whistled, “We forgive you.” And they splashed each other and leapt out of the water, seeing who can jump the highest.

On the fourth day since the wise Cloud blew the message across the ocean, the turtles showed up. They swam from the far end of the ocean. They saw the frogs leaping from lily pad to lily pad, the fishes darting here and there on the bottom of the lagoon, and the dolphins splashing each other. Happiness overwhelmed them. They went up to the mighty Waterfall and said, “I see the party already started. It is good seeing you again.”

“It is good seeing you too, turtles. Please settle down into the lagoon and make it your home once again. And please forgive me.”

“We forgive you.” The turtles then inched their way out of the water and onto the banks of the lagoon. There they sunbathed.

On the fifth day since sending the “welcome home” message, the birds showed up. They flew from the far end of the world. What a sight to behold! The frogs leapt from lily pad to lily pad, the fishes darted here and there on the bottom of the lagoon, the dolphins splashed each other with glee, and the turtles sunbathed on the banks. For the first time in a long time, they had peace. The birds circled the mighty Waterfall and chirped, “We’ve traveled all over the world, but this is the only place we can call home.”
“The lagoon is not the same without you and your beautiful melodies. Please settle down in the lagoon and make it your home once again. And please forgive me.”

They perched themselves onto the branches. “We forgive you.” Then wonderful melodies filled the air.

The mighty Waterfall was pleased.

That night, the mighty Waterfall looked over the lagoon. The frogs croaked on their lily pads, the fishes slept on the bottom of the lagoon, the dolphins sang, the turtles rested in their shells, and the birds retreated to their nests. It was whole once again, except for the beautiful little Fish.

The wise Cloud said, “You have done well. A waterfall is truly magnificent. You are the source of life and happiness for countless creatures. And it was a shame that something as small as a little fish can bring down something so mighty. It would be a tragedy if history repeated itself.”

“It would be a tragedy.”
